In The Community

Habitat for Humanity

Mary Beth King (that’s me) is the proud Project Director on the Young Professional Board of Habitat for Humanity. Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit Christian housing ministry that:

  • Seeks to eliminate substandard housing by building simple, decent, affordable homes to sell to low-income families in need.
  • Works in equal partnership with families, volunteers and donors building a sense of community as well as affordable housing. Our partners include corporations, churches, foundations, organizations and individual donors who donate money, labor and materials to fund and build our homes.
  • Is about more than just building houses. The staff and board of directors of Cincinnati Habitat are dedicated individuals who are passionate about building homes, families, communities and hope!
  • Is privately funded and does not receive any support from United Way or Habitat for Humanity International. Funding of cash and in-kind contributions from Cincinnati businesses, churches, foundations, organizations and individuals provide money, labor and talent for each Cincinnati Habitat housing project.

Farm Sanctuary

Sweet Peace Bakery actively donates money to Farm Sanctuary.  Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of factory farming and to encourage a new awareness and understanding about “farm animals.” At Farm Sanctuary, these animals are our friends, not our food.

We started out by visiting farms, stockyards and slaughterhouses to document conditions, and we found animals literally left for dead. Hilda, a sheep found on a pile of dead animals behind Lancaster Stockyards, was the first animal to be rescued by Farm Sanctuary. She lived with us for more than a decade, and died of old age.

Through the years, we have rescued thousands of animals, and educated millions of people about their plight. People are shocked to learn about the intolerable conditions that are commonplace on today’s industrialized farms.  Our rescue and education work continues, as we advocate for laws and policies to prevent suffering and promote compassion. We are reaching out to legislators and businesses, and working to bring about institutional reforms.

Park & Vine

Sweet Peace Bakery actively supports events sponsored by Park + Vine.  Described as the “General Store of the Future” by CityBeat, Park + Vine offers a wide variety of eco-friendly merchandise that minimizes the use of natural resources and animal byproducts. Products include reusable bottles, bags and food carriers, non-toxic cleaning and paint supplies, natural baby and parenting supplies, a growing selection of foodstuff, and lots more.

Since our opening in May 2007, we have encouraged people to become more aware of the environmental impacts of their consumption choices through a nice variety of events that, according to CityBeat, show “struggling wannabe-greenies the way to environmental salvation.”

We thank each of these organizations for the work they do and allowing us to use information about their organizations on our website.
